Although many people have never heard the term hypogonadism, it affects millions of US men and even some women. Hypogonadism is another name for low testosterone; however, it’s not the same thing as what we call andropause (or “male menopause”), which is an age-related condition involving low testosterone in men. Age may play a role in hypogonadism, but it may result from other causes and occur in younger men. The thing to know about this condition is that it seriously compromises quality of life for the men (and women) it affects. The most obvious effects, as one might expect, are low libido and diminished sexual performance, which may profoundly affect relationships and undermine self-esteem. But it also erodes energy and stamina. Furthermore, it compromises the brain, reducing the ability to store and retrieve memories and interfering with spatial cognition.
